Joseph first began learning Chinese at the age of sixteen when he moved to Taiwan for a year as a Rotary exchange student. He continued to learn about Chinese literature, history, art, and religion as a Chinese major at Reed College, where he translated and analyzed a 17th century Chinese fashion manual for his senior thesis. He completed his MA in Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University, focusing his research on material and print culture of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

When not in the field with Dragons, Joseph works as a translator for Tzu Chi Foundation, a Buddhist NGO based in Hualien, Taiwan. On the weekends, Joseph is likely to be found wandering the alleys of Chengdu and exploring the city’s incredible food scene. Joseph comes to Dragons after two years working at the Chinese summer programs at Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy.
