Dragons Admin are on their way to our all-staff training and orientation in the Sierras!
In general, Dragons hires mostly return staff for our fall semesters. We have limited positions open, and we are currently seeking highly-qualified and experienced instructors for the following programs:
- Himalaya Fall Semester (1 position open)
- Middle East Fall Semester (1 position open)
See the program page for details on the itinerary. We need applicants with deep in-country knowledge, experiences and contacts in the region.
Working a summer program with Dragons is generally a good stepping-stone to semester work – and we do encourage you to apply for our Summer 2013 programming by submitting an application beginning November/December of 2012.
April 18th, 2012:
Dragons has completed its Summer 2012 hiring. If you’re interested in applying for next year’s summer programs, please submit your application in November of 2011; reviews/1st interviews begin in December.
- We are now accepting resumes for Fall 2012 Semester programs. Before we open up hiring to new staff, we do first confirm commitments from current staff. On average there is ZERO-ONE position per semester open for new staff at this point. If you send in a resume and/or application, it will be queued up for review once all return staff contracts are confirmed (end April/May). (Semester program dates are on the Semester program pages on this website and Instructor Orientation takes place the week before the course starts.)
- PLEASE note that this is a very busy time for our Staffing department. You may not receive an immediate response from us regarding the status of your resume/application. If we are interested in pursuing a conversation with you, we will be in touch.
March 14th, 2012:
Ah, spring is in the air!!! Thank you all for your patience as we navigate the staffing process; we’ve been working hard at putting our staffing puzzle together the past few weeks. Dragons is coming to the end of our summer hiring season and most positions are now either filled or awaiting finalized contracts.
Dragons works with over 100 field guides every year and presently we have limited positions available. At this time, we are asking that you please send your resume only – that addresses your regional experience – to staffing@wheretherebedragons.com (you do not need to take the time to fill out our online application). As soon as space is available for an area that fits your strengths and experience, we will be in touch. We are always looking for good people. If you don’t hear from us, please know that we have limited space and we will be in touch if an open position matches your skill set.
Lastly, if you have applied for the 2012 summer season, we’d like you to know that most applications roll over to files where they will be considered for both Semester programs and even next year’s summer programs as open positions become available. Please know that if we’ve sent you a note that says your application is being considered, but haven’t yet interviewed you, it’s because there hasn’t YET been a match of your skills to a program, but we are still very excited to have opened the conversation with you. We look forward to exploring a future relationship as the opportunity arises!

February 29th, 2012
Happy Leap Day! We’ve been working hard at putting our staffing puzzle together the past few weeks and thank you for your patience. We’ve received so many outstanding applicants and regret that in several cases, we simply don’t have the space. We can’t “close” courses to applications until contracts are returned – most applications will roll over to files where they will be considered for both Semester programs and even next year’s summer programs. So please know that if we’ve sent you a note that says your application is being considered, but haven’t interviewed you, it’s because there hasn’t YET been a match of your skills to a program, but we are still very excited to have opened the conversation with you. While many programs are not yet totally closed to hiring, our summer staffing teams are near being finalized.

They are reviewed on a rolling basis and are considered, not only for individual potential, but also for instructor team dynamics. Any applications submitted in October or November may have been lost during this malfunction.

In addition, if you have submitted an application after July 2011, you may also want to resubmit your resume and application. Due to the transition of staffing directors, this will ensure your application doesn’t get overlooked. Kindly indicate in your application that it is a re-submission.

“Dragons” (www.wheretherebedragons.com) is currently accepting applications for instructors for our Summer 2011 programming. Applicants should have a well-demonstrated dedication, passion, skill set and understanding of the region/country for which they are applying. We empower our instructor teams to use their own in-country resources, contacts, and relationships because we believe that it is the creativity and vision of our instructors that make Dragons programs the most unique and highest-quality learning experiences in the field of international experiential education.
Dragons instructors set the industry standard: They are committed educators who are intent on facilitating the deepest of personal learning, reflection and growth through the most meaningful cross-cultural experiences. When not guiding with Dragons, our instructors are graduate students, returned Peace Corps Volunteers, U.N. development professionals, veteran guides, and career teachers – all of whom share a passion for exploration, adventure, and hands-on learning through authentic, low-impact travel experiences.
While we don’t expect that every applicant will meet all of the below criteria, the ideal candidate will:
- Demonstrate unique in-country experience, regional fluency and strong contacts/relationships in any of the countries where we run programs (please speak to this in your cover letter or application)
- Demonstrate foreign language skills relevant to the program area.
- Demonstrate experience leading groups and/or working with adolescents.

Review of new applicants for our Summer 2011 programming will begin in late November/December and continues on a rolling basis through March. For priority consideration for our summer programming, it’s recommended that you submit your online application by the last week of January.
November 4th, 2010:
Dragon’s Staffing Director, Christina Rivera, returned to her office on November 4th, having been abroad (working) since late August, and will be attending to questions and applications over the month of November; please be patient in hearing back as there is a considerable backlog.
There ARE remaining open positions on our Spring 2011 Semester Programs and all applications that have come in within 2010 will be considered. If you haven’t yet applied and are interested in leading a Spring Semester, please clearly indicate, in your online application, exactly which semester program you have the regional skill set for, and interest in, leading.
Review of new applicants for our Summer 2011 programming will begin in late November/December and continues on a rolling basis throughout March. Dragons has a summer return instructor rate of about 55-60% and it’s our first goal to secure commitments from our alum instructor community. After we have heard back from all our return staff (October/November) we open up the remaining positions to new applicants. For primary consideration for our summer programming, it’s recommended that you submit your online application in early November. Once your application is submitted, we do keep it on file for re-consideration for all our programming, for at least one year. If you have submitted an application earlier than November of 2009 and would like to be reconsidered, we do ask that you please submit a new and updated application.
Please make sure to read through the sections of our Staff Opportunities site, including Instructor Qualifications, before applying. Thank you!
August 17th, 2010:
At this time, all of our Fall 2010 Semester positions are now filled. We had an exceptionally high return rate for past Dragons instructors leading again this fall (90%), and thus limited openings for which to consider new candidates. Although Dragons typically runs fewer programs during the Spring Semester, applications will be reviewed again in November in consideration for any open instructor positions on our spring semester programs.
In general, leading a 4 or 6-week summer program with Dragons is considered a stepping stone to semester work. For our Summer 2011 programming, we highly encourage you to submit an application in November or December of 2010 to make sure your application gets priority consideration.
Dragon’s Staffing Director, Christina Rivera, will be in the field (abroad) from September 1st through November 1st. Applications will begin being reviewed upon her return. Thank you, in advance, for your patience in hearing back from us. Should you have any questions that need attention before November 1st, it’s best to call the Dragon’s office at: 303.413.0822.
*Also, for those inquiring, at this time we do not have any openings in our Boulder administration office.
