Astou "Toussa" Gueye
Toussa aka Astou Gueye, born and raised in Dakar, Senegal, who describes herself as an activist, feminist, artist, entrepreneur and farmer, started to be interested in hip-hop music already at the age of thirteen. Back then she already wrote her first lyrics about what was going on around her and what was happening in her community, lyrics that serve as social commentary. Her texts, mainly in the local language Wolof, deal with work, dreams, migration, slavery, the challenges of being a woman, strength and visions of the future.
After over a decade working on her music career, she decided to pick up on her formation in agriculture. It was in times at the beginning of Covid that she moved to a small town outside of Dakar, where she now focuses on organic farming, sustainable development and the education of children’s groups at the community-based Association Djarama in Toubab Diallao. Yet she has never abandoned her passion for music. In her free time she is currently recording her new album entitled ?
