Studying abroad can be one of the most influential times in a young adult’s life. It offers an unmatched opportunity for students to experience a new culture, step outside of their comfort zone, and learn and grow independent of everyday comforts.
Where There Be Dragons independent study programs are available for students who have already completed a group travel program of at least one month, and they are suggested for students between the ages of 18 and 25 years old. Independent study programs are personalized and immersive experiences for travelers who are eager to be immersed and engaged in a new culture. Available locations include Guatemala, Bolivia, China, Senegal, Nepal, Cambodia, and Indonesia.
3 Benefits of an Independent Study Program
Have a Support System Available
Traveling abroad solo can be a huge undertaking, which is why our independent study programs offer a balance of independence and support. Dragons resources and mentors are present during programs to serve as a cross-cultural guide and trusted support system. While abroad, students have access to Dragons facilitated activities, guest speakers, excursions, local contacts, and other helpful resources, including vetted volunteer opportunities. Our team has years of experience facilitating these types of programs in our communities, offering unmatched knowledge and expertise.
Be Encouraged to Step Outside of Your Comfort Zone
Unlike a group experience, independent study programs leave students with more time and flexibility to create an experience of their choosing. Students are encouraged to learn about art, cooking, language, dancing, and beyond so they are able to hone in on their skills and interests. Dragons mentors are not only available for support, but also to ensure that students are challenging themselves throughout the process.
Flexible Programs Work With Your Schedule
Our self-directed experiences are personalized so students can get the most out of their travels and focus on their personal goals. These programs have two start dates (February 15 and March 1st) and must be a minimum of 6-weeks with the option for weekly extensions up until May 1st.
