Day 1-2 |
We commence our journey in Antigua, 45 minutes outside of Guatemala City before relocating to the idyllic shores of Lake Atitlan in the Tzutujil Mayan community of San Juan La Laguna, or as it’s known in the Mayan language Xe Kuku Abaj. In our first days, we stay in an eco-lodge and coffee farm and are introduced to the themes of the course and taught skills for staying healthy while traveling in Guatemala. We have the opportunity to learn traditional mayan backstrap loom weaving and are introduced to some basics of the Mayan language. |
Day 3-6 |
From San Juan we travel to the town of Pachitulul located on the south edge of lake Atitlan at the base of the volcano Santiago. Here we stay with local families and learn about mayan cosmovision and deepen our understanding of the local culture’s relationship to agriculture and seeds from the team at the Mesoamerican Permaculture Institute (IMAP). We also examine how Western models of development have impacted this region and people. |
Day 7 |
From Pachitulul we return to Antigua. We wrap up our time in this colonial capital which is now a UNESCO world heritage site. Participants have the opportunity to explore the city during the day before we close the course with a final traditional dinner. The following day participants travel to Guatemala City to catch their international flights home. |
