Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician

Caroline grew up splitting her time between Chicago and rural Vermont- an experience which instilled in her a love for the outdoors and a deep appreciation for cultural and linguistic diversity. As a sophomore in high school, Caroline traveled to Berlin, Germany where she lived with a host family and attended a German high school. This experience allowed her to gain German linguistic and cultural fluency, and opened her eyes to the transformative experience of living a new reality.

Caroline’s deep interest in language learning and cultural immersion brought her to India twice before college. The second time, she returned for a semester with Dragons where she fell in love with the complexity and vibrance of India, and was again transfixed by the experience of living within a new cultural context. Caroline then began studying at Colorado College where, as a German Major, she focused on understanding the experiences of refugees and migrants living in Germany. During college, Caroline traveled to Germany to study the influence of pivotal BIPOC leaders on the history of Berlin. She later returned to Germany to visit a “Waldkindergarten” and conducted research for her thesis comparing cultural variations in parenting philosophy between Germany and the United States. Caroline also completed her minor in Religious Studies with a focus on South Asian religion, a deep interest she gained after her time with Dragons in India.

Guided by her love of the outdoors and deep belief in cross-cultural and experiential education, Caroline began leading outdoor education trips for Overland Summers in 2022, where she guided students on backpacking expeditions for two seasons throughout Southern Alaska and Central Switzerland. The following year, Caroline became a leader for Putney Student Travel, where she led students on a 5-week trip throughout Switzerland, Italy, France and Holland. Caroline then began working as an instructor with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). She finds immense joy in sharing her love of language learning, meaningful cultural exchange and rewarding challenge with her students.

Caroline is constantly seeking to deepen her competency as an outdoor and experiential educator and recently expanded her skill set by summitting both Mt. Blanc and Gran Paradiso in the French and Italian Alps. Shortly thereafter, Caroline obtained her Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician certification through NOLS. In her free time, Caroline enjoys rock climbing, painting, and playing rugby.
